Mid-conference Field Excursion
Thursday, 23 August 2018, 1:30pm – 6:30pm.
Take an afternoon tour of a unique and scenic local bamboo forest! Nanshan Bamboo Forest is the most famous scenic spot in eastern China with ~5770-acre bamboo forest area and streams flowing into Tianmu Lake. This is a half day adventure that will depart at 13:30 p.m. for the 1.5-hour drive. We will meet at 1:00 P.M. in the conference hotel hall. We will spend approximately 3 hours in the Nanshan Bamboo Forest with dinner provided, and return around 7:00 P.M. Please be physically prepared for a half day of hiking, with possible wet adventures of getting in ankle-deep water as we meander through the bamboo forest. Nanjing is the capital city of Jiangsu Province, located in the Yangtze River Delta, eastern China. Chinese civilization is over 6000 years old and Nanjing was founded 2500 years ago, serving as the capital of 10 Chinese dynasties (http://english.nanjing.gov.cn/tour/attractions/). Nanjing shares the same or approximate latitude with Shanghai China, San Diego and Dallas USA, and Kagoshima Japan. Nanjing is characterized by sub-tropic monsoonal climate, with average August temperatures of 24–32 degrees C (75–89 degrees F) and precipitation of 129 mm. The most interesting places for tourism include Zijin (Purple) Mountain, Xuanwu Lake, Confucius Temple and Qinghuai River, Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, and the Nanjing Eye.
